U.S. Has Reissued These 21 Travel Advisory Updates In May

Published 14 hours ago4 minute read

None of us need the U.S. State Department to remind us that the world has gone a little crazy over the past decade or so, but they sure are reminding us of the potential dangers when traveling the world.

There have been 21 travel advisories reissued in May alone.

Some have key updates, and others simply remind us to approach our travels with a “we're not in Kansas anymore” mindset.

While you probably don't have Russia or Somalia high on your wish list right now, there are a multitude of popular destinations with recent updates that deserve your attention.

“Exercise Normal Precautions” basically equates to “Nothing to see here, folks. Keep it movin'”.

While crime can occur anywhere at anytime, the good news is 4 countries have been reissued with ‘Level 1' designations, giving the ultimate green light for your next adventure.

So, if you're planning on heading to , one of the world's last frontiers for tourism, or Europe's blip-on-the-map , or even more popular Switzerland or , odds are in your favor you'll have a seamless trip.

Throw in Paraguay too for good measure. It was reissued as ‘Level 1' on April 30, barely missing the cut.

Before diving in to ‘Level 2′ destinations, for reference, it's important to note many of Americans' favorite getaways are designated as such.

Paris, Cancun, Punta Cana…the list goes on and on. What ‘Level 2' designations really mean is it's widely deemed safe, but there have been reported incidents worth being informed about.

For example, Cancun is undoubtedly Americans' favorite international vacation destination, but even as safe as it feels, there have been rare instances of violence in touristy areas. You just never know…

The U.S. State Department has reissued 11 ‘Level 2' advisories in May. This simply means to be more aware of your surroundings for the following destinations:

Belgium and Italy are the latest additions, issued on May 22nd and 23rd, solely for terrorism concerns.

Trinidad & Tobago beach on nice day

Level 3 is where things get a little more dicey. Oddly enough, the State Department must not know my ex-girlfriend's family because I always reconsidered traveling to their family gatherings, but I digress…

Planning a trip to a ‘Level 3' destination requires more planning than any of the previous categories.

I've been to multiple places deemed ‘Level 3' and have never had any issues, but it's important to take advisories seriously as they're based on the most recent intel.

In this case, the State Department has issued only 2 advisories urging Americans to reconsider their plans:

Tourist visiting Kaietur Falls in Guyana

Guyana has seen a noticeable spike in crime rates, while Trinidad and Tobago are experiencing various issues.

Not only are they dealing with violent crime, but there have been terror threats and kidnappings, highlighting a laundry list of concerns.

No wonder Frontier Airlines cancelled all flights here…

Level 4 is about as straightforward as it gets. If you visit a ‘Level 4' destination, you may have trouble receiving Embassy assistance in many instances should you find yourself in a sticky situation, whether it be wrongful detention from arbitrary enforcement of laws or worse.

As you surely can figure out why, Russia headlines the most recent Level 4 updates, followed by a few other no-go zones:

Stick to telling yourself ‘you're the Captain now' over a bowl of Cap'n Crunch. No need to set sail for Somalia.
