Twum Boafo Criticizes Wontumi's Detention, Cites NDC's Past Sufferings Under NPP

Kwadwo Twum Boafo, the Acting CEO of the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC), has characterized the public outcry surrounding the invitation and subsequent detention of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman also known as Chairman Wontumi, as "exaggerated." Speaking on Pan African TV, Twum Boafo offered his perspective on the matter, drawing from his own experiences.

Twum Boafo recounted his own experiences and those of fellow NDC appointees during the erstwhile Akufo-Addo administration in 2017, highlighting a significant contrast in how such matters were handled. He pointed out that while NDC officials, including himself, Kojo Bonsu, Governor Richardson, and Alex Mould, faced similar EOCO invitations and even home ransacking, their cases proceeded without extensive media coverage or public spectacle. "My home was ransacked. My father's home was ransacked, even my younger brothers' homes were ransacked," he stated, emphasizing the nature of their experiences.

Regarding Chairman Wontumi's continued detention, Twum Boafo attributed it to a specific legal maneuver. He asserted that "Wontumi would be walking about freely if not for Gary Nimako running to court for bail variation on the blind side of Wontumi's lawyers."

Twum Boafo also took the opportunity to condemn what he described as Wontumi's "unguarded statements" directed against former President Mahama. He made a passionate argument for increased civility in political discourse. "People have blood running through their veins. They have emotions. So, you can't speak such uncouth words about them and think that it's okay," he expressed with evident frustration.

Adding another dimension to his critique, Twum Boafo alleged that there might be deeper, more sinister motives behind some of the public support and actions related to Wontumi's case, particularly from within Wontumi's own party. "Some NPP gurus want him locked up for a number of reasons," he claimed. He questioned the strategy of high-profile lawyers protesting outside EOCO, suggesting that they could have pursued established legal channels for bail variation. "Most of them want him locked up first for political vendetta because he got huge contracts that they did not get and some of them do not want him to contest the Ashanti Regional chairmanship," Twum Boafo asserted, painting a picture of potential internal party strife and maneuvering.
