A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has condemned public officials for using their social media accounts to disseminate state and official information.
Sharing his views on Citi FM, on June 3, 2025, he slammed the Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Justice Srem Sai, for providing an update on the investigation of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), via his personal social media account.
Agyepong argued that communication meant for personal associates and network, must be distinctly separate from official communications, describing the practice by some public officials as unethical and inappropriate.
“EOCO has not told us [anything on Wontumi's arrest]. Apart from the fact that the Deputy Attorney General used social media to inform the public on the update on his (Wontumi) detention (sic); the social media account he used is not an official handle. That is wrong. I think it is very wrong for state officials to be promoting their social media presence using official issues. That is completely unethical and should go against the code of conduct that the president has put in place.
“If the Attorney General's office has a social media handle the Attorney General's department officially use to put out information, that one can be accepted as the current position of the Ministry of Justice but not on your personal social media handle. That is incorrect, it's unethical, it is wrong,” he said.
His comments come in response to Srem Sai’s recent update on May 29, 2025, on his Facebook account, disclosing the criminal offences for which Chairman Wontumi is currently under investigation for.
He indicated that Wontumi is being investigated for alleged money laundering, fraud, and for causing financial loss to the state.
The investigation according to him is concurrently being done alongside ongoing assets recovery efforts.
“Suspect BERNARD ANTWI BOASIAKO, aka Chairman Wontumi, is under investigation for various criminal offences (including fraud, causing financial loss to the State, and money laundering). The criminal investigation is running concurrently with asset recovery processes - to prevent further dissipation of what law enforcement agencies strongly suspect to be proceeds of crime,” his post read.
Srem Sai further stated that another investigation, believed to be part of a larger international organised crime scheme, was also being conducted on Wontumi.
“The suspect is also under a second strand of investigation which is part of a larger international organised crime scheme. The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) is assiduously working with our international law enforcement partners on this second strand of criminal investigations,” the post added.
