Two Female Factory Workers Drown in Kano Pool

Kano State has been grappling with separate incidents involving loss of life and criminal activity, prompting responses from the Kano State Fire Service and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). These events underscore the importance of public safety and the protection of critical infrastructure within the state.

The Kano State Fire Service reported the tragic deaths of two women who drowned in a pool in the Gezawa Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Tuesday around 11:15 am when the Fire Service received a distress call from the local vigilante group. Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi stated that the women, employees of a local zobo (hibiscus drink) processing company, had entered the water to bathe after work. According to relatives, this routine activity led to the fatal accident. A search that began the previous evening concluded on Tuesday morning with the recovery of both bodies, unfortunately, they were unconscious. The remains have been handed over to the Gezawa Police Division for further investigation. The Fire Service has extended condolences to the families and urged the public to exercise caution around water bodies, particularly in industrial zones.

In a separate series of events, the NSCDC Kano State Command has detained five suspects for alleged vandalism and theft. According to the Command’s Spokesman, SC Ibrahim Idris-Abdullahi, four suspects were apprehended for vandalizing and stealing from Government Secondary School Unguwar Rimi and GSS Unguwa Uku in the Tarauni Local Government Area. The stolen items included roofing sheets, iron rods, cushion chairs, mats, window frames, and ceiling fans. Even important documents and teaching materials were not spared. Efforts are underway to recover items sold to a receiver, who is also in custody.

Additionally, a 17-year-old from Gidan Tela, PRP, Dambatta Local Government, was caught vandalizing and stealing electric pole equipment at PRP, Dambatta. The recovered exhibits include insulators, an aluminum cable, and various nuts and brass. Idris-Abdullahi stated that investigations have been completed, and the suspects will be charged in court. He reaffirmed the NSCDC’s commitment, under the leadership of Mr. Shafi’u Abdulmumin, to safeguarding lives and critical national assets in Kano State.

These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in ensuring public safety and security in Kano State, requiring continued vigilance and proactive measures from both the authorities and the public.
