Tuskegee Airmen honored at Owensboro airport annual celebration
OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — The Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport honors the legacy of the Tuskegee airmen for the third year. The airmen fought in World War II and were the first black military aviators in U.S. history.
The local VFW marched to honor their bravery and impact despite facing racism.
They completed over 1,000 missions and shot down more than 250 enemy aircraft.
Their efforts also jump started the desegregation of the military.

“Being a pilot is such a prestigious position anyway, and the fact that this broke down such a barrier of what the stereotype was. Then, they flew so many successful missions and were willing to sacrifice the same as anybody else was,” says Chris Castlen, Daviess County Commissioner.
Officials hope the celebrations inspire future generations to continue to break barriers.
