It’s not the biggest new release day for the horror genre this week – that’s coming this Friday… stay tuned! – but today still brings with it four fresh frights including a new series from Shudder and the at-home premiere of one of this year’s biggest theatrical horror hits.

A Canadian horror anthology series from “Slasher” creators  and , Shudder’s premiered today with the first two episodes of the series.

A group of 10 true crime obsessives are invited to the opening weekend of the newly renovated Cold River Motel, the site of a 30-year-old unsolved satanic mass murder. History repeats itself when the guests get stranded and start getting knocked off one by one during a murder spree that grows exponentially more gruesome than the original with each kill.

The cast includes  (“Will & Grace”) as Hemmingway, a chef with a wickedly sinister flair,  (“Slasher)” as Paige, a former scream queen actress looking to revive a career that has seemingly left her behind;  (“The Boys”) as Crow, a new-age medium with an apparent connection to the massacre’s victims; and  (“The Hardy Boys”) as Blake, a true crime writer and himself a survivor of a mass killing.

They’re joined by  (“Outer Banks”) as Kawayan, a talented artist with a dark focus on murder;  (“Transplant”) as Andy, a bookish academic at the forefront of contemporary true crime studies; and  (“Chapelwaite”) as Adriana, a hybristophilic flight attendant with several notorious serial killer notches on her bedpost.

Drag queen  (“Canada’s Drag Race”) also makes a guest appearance as Magenta, a stylish real estate agent who sells the Coldwater Motel to its new owners Ruby and Portia, played by  (“Burden of Truth”) and  (“Nikita”), respectively.

Carpenter serves as showrunner, with  (Backcountry, Pyewacket) directing.


And coming-of-age dystopian zombie film was released onto VOD outlets courtesy of Firebook Entertainment beginning today, June 17.

Meagan Navarro wrote in her review out of Fantasia, “This coming-of-age horror fantasy gets bleak, as dystopian tales tend to, with Ezban plunging three young boys into gruesome, harrowing scenarios. But it’s offset with bursts of levity, whimsy, and a sense of impressive style that sets this post-apocalyptic story apart, even when familiar hallmarks creep in.”
