Asantehene Mediates Bawku Chieftaincy Conflict

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, is scheduled to hold a pivotal meeting with members of the Kusang Traditional Council (traditional leaders of the Kusasis) on Monday, June 30, 2025. This crucial engagement signifies a continued and earnest effort by the Asantehene to mediate the long-standing and complex chieftaincy conflict in Bawku.

A statement released on June 29, 2025, by the Chief of Staff of the Office of the Asantehene, underscored the meeting's integral role within the Asantehene's broader mediation initiative. It further urged all parties embroiled in the conflict to extend their full cooperation to the ongoing peace efforts. The statement explicitly read, “His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, will meet with the Kusang Traditional Council on Monday, 30th June, 2025. Asantehene requests all stakeholders to cooperate for us to find a lasting peace in Bawku.”

This sentiment was echoed by a press release issued by the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, reaffirming Otumfuo’s unwavering commitment to resolving the deep-seated tensions in the region. The Palace’s statement also confirmed the meeting details and appealed to all stakeholders in the Bawku crisis to lend their support to the peace process, emphasizing the commitment to both restore and sustain peace through dialogue and collaboration.

The Asantehene's dedicated mediation efforts commenced in 2023, during which he actively engaged key stakeholders from both the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. His consistent objective has been to address the core chieftaincy dispute that fuels the conflict, reiterating his resolve to restore enduring peace not only in Bawku but also in its surrounding areas within the Upper East Region.

Prior to this upcoming meeting, the conflicting Kusasi and Mamprusi factions had previously participated in peace negotiations with the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace between April 28 and April 30, 2025. Following these initial talks, the mediation process was briefly paused. Otumfuo himself confirmed the resumption of these crucial discussions during a meeting on Monday, May 12, 2025, with the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Analysts observing the situation have highlighted a critical concern: the Bawku conflict, situated in a border town, is becoming increasingly vulnerable to spillover effects stemming from regional insecurity, particularly from neighboring Burkina Faso. The ongoing mediation by the Asantehene thus represents a vital endeavor to secure stability and a lasting resolution in the face of these escalating pressures.
