Lafarge Africa Launches ECOPlanet Elephant Cement

Lafarge Africa Plc, a prominent innovator in sustainable building solutions, has significantly expanded its low-carbon multipurpose cement offerings with the introduction of ECOPlanet Elephant. Launched on Wednesday, June 17, 2025, in Lagos State, Nigeria, this strategic initiative underscores Lafarge Africa’s commitment to producing sustainable and high-quality products. The new product builds upon the successful 2024 launch of ECOPlanet Unicem, further solidifying the company's vision for environmentally conscious construction.
ECOPlanet Elephant cement offers a substantial 30% reduction in CO2 emissions without compromising on performance, marking a significant step towards enabling sustainable building practices across Africa. This provides customers and communities with an enhanced sustainable product choice for various construction needs.
According to Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lafarge Africa Plc, the expansion of the ECOPlanet portfolio with this low-carbon multipurpose cement highlights the company’s strong dedication to accelerating green growth. He noted the industry’s clear demand for low-carbon products, evidenced by the positive reception to ECOPlanet Unicem last year. Alade-Akinyemi described ECOPlanet Elephant as a “game changer” vital for fostering green cities and sustainable development, emphasizing the company’s commitment to partnering with customers and the supply chain for better communities through innovative, circular, and eco-efficient solutions.
Gbenga Onimowo, Commercial Director at Lafarge Africa Plc, affirmed that ECOPlanet Elephant retains the superior strength, durability, and workability for which the traditional Elephant cement is renowned. This ensures a seamless transition for builders and developers adopting more sustainable construction practices. Onimowo expressed excitement about the positive impact the product is set to have on the industry, reinforcing the idea of carrying customers and partners on the journey towards a sustainable future.
The low-carbon ECOPlanet Elephant cement is designed for multipurpose applications, including plastering, concreting, and on-site block-making. It has already begun to gain traction among builders, architects, and policymakers due to its reduced carbon footprint compared to conventional cement. Furthermore, this new cement offering is supported by advanced sustainability building certifications such as Breeam, LEED, and EDGE, ensuring its alignment with global environmental standards.
The launch of ECOPlanet Elephant is a crucial part of Lafarge Africa’s broader strategic efforts to address environmental challenges within the Built Industry and to advance the decarbonization of building processes, ultimately contributing to a net-zero future.
