Trump Weighs Travel Ban On Nigeria, 35 Other Countries (Full List)

Published 16 hours ago2 minute read

According to a leaked memo signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and obtained by The Washington Post, the proposed policy could result in visa restrictions or outright travel bans being imposed on countries that fail to comply within a 60-day window.

Among the countries reportedly on the list are Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt, Cameroon, Liberia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, and Côte d’Ivoire. Others include:

West and Central Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal.

East and Southern Africa: Djibouti, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia.

Other regions: Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Bhutan, Cambodia, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.

The memo accuses these nations of not meeting “baseline identity-management and information-sharing criteria.” Specifically, the US claims some governments cannot issue reliable identity documents, and others allegedly face widespread corruption in civil documentation; a number of these countries have high rates of citizens overstaying visas in the US.

It added that these shortcomings hinder Washington’s efforts to vet visa applicants and ensure compliance with immigration law.

As part of the proposed measures, the affected countries are expected to submit an initial plan of action to the State Department by Wednesday. Those who fail to comply could face various penalties, including visa suspensions.

The report said the proposal represents an extension of Trump’s hardline stance on immigration. However, no final decision has been made, and the White House has yet to publicly comment on the leaked memo.

When contacted for clarification by the above publication, a State Department spokesperson declined to comment on what was termed “internal deliberations.” The White House also reportedly did not respond to requests for a statement on the matter.
