Belgium’s two largest airports, Brussels Airport and Charleroi Airport, have confirmed that no departing passenger flights will operate on February 13 due to a nationwide strike. The industrial action, organized by Belgium’s joint trade union front, is expected to cause major travel disruptions across the country.
Brussels Airport, located in Zaventem, had already anticipated significant operational challenges, as a large number of its handling agents and security personnel are participating in the strike. However, on Monday, airport officials announced a full suspension of all departing flights for the day.
“To ensure the safety of passengers and staff, we have decided, in consultation with the airlines, not to operate any departing passenger flights on 13 February,” the airport confirmed in a statement.
Charleroi Airport, Belgium’s second-largest air hub, has also canceled all departing flights for the day. The airport cited staff shortages as the primary reason for the decision. However, some incoming Schengen flights are still expected to operate.
Authorities at both airports have urged passengers not to travel to the airport and to check directly with their airlines for rebooking options.
Airlines have begun contacting affected travelers, but airport officials strongly advise passengers to verify their flight status through their airline’s website or the Brussels Airport app before making any travel plans. While all departures are suspended, some arriving flights may also experience cancellations or delays.
This strike is expected to have a widespread impact on transportation and public services across Belgium, with travelers urged to plan accordingly and seek alternative arrangements if necessary.
