Three times Yohuno-led Ghana Police Service apprehended criminals in joint foreign operations
COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno is the Inspector General of Police (IGP)
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has recently earned praise from Ghanaians for its efforts in combating crime in the country.
The public’s admiration for the Ghana Police Service stems from a series of successful joint operations with foreign law enforcement agencies that led to the arrest of criminals in their crime prevention efforts.
Many have described this feat as a breath of fresh air for the Ghana Police Service under the leadership of the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Notable instances include the rescue of two kidnapped Ghanaian women and the extradition of a robber who had gone into hiding in neighbouring Togo.
The efforts by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) together with law enforcers of countries in all the separate cases achieved the expected results – where the criminals involved were arrested.
Rescue of Ghanaian women in Nigeria
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) liaised with Nigerian law enforcement authorities to rescue two Ghanaian women, Evelyn Serwaa Konadu and Anastasia Baidoo, who had been kidnapped in Nigeria, with their captors demanding a ransom.
According to the police, the victims were lured through romance scams orchestrated by the suspects.
The two victims, Evelyn Serwaa Konadu, a 39-year-old well-known hairdresser and event decorator and Anastasia Baidoo, were successfully rescued through a joint operation by the Ghana Police Service, the National Signals Bureau (NSB), and the Nigeria Police Force.
Their abductions came to light after videos of the incident went viral, prompting the collaborative rescue efforts.
As part of a coordinated investigation, eight suspects linked to the kidnapping were also arrested across various locations in Ghana and Nigeria.
Extradition of notorious robber from Togo
Another move by the police that has earned them plaudits is the extradition of notorious Accra-based armed robbery suspect Adina Akpo Abdou Moudjibou from Togo to Ghana.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on May 17, 2025, the Director General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said that Togolese authorities handed over Moudjibou, who goes by many aliases, to Ghanaian authorities over the weekend.
She said that Moudjibou, who has both Ghanaian and Togolese identity documents, has been captured on CCTV footage robbing residents of Accra in prime areas such as East Legon, Ridge, Tesano and Cantonments.
He was arrested by Togolese authorities in January 2025. His release to Ghana was after the completion of the necessary regulatory documents.
Arrest of human traffickers in Côte d’Ivoire
A human trafficking ring targeting vulnerable individuals was dismantled through a collaborative effort involving the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol), Ghanaian law enforcement authorities, and authorities in Côte d’Ivoire.
A total of 33 victims, lured through deceptive means, have since been rescued. They hail from various countries, including Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ghana.
The suspects' modus operandi involved targeting unsuspecting victims and vulnerable individuals by promising them lucrative job offers and travel opportunities in Canada, DW Africa reports.
Additionally, the victims, who are reported to have paid up to $9,000 to their traffickers under the false promise of securing a job in Canada, traveled to meet their recruiters, only to be trafficked into Abidjan in Côte d'Ivoire.
The victims are said to have been held captive under ‘physical and psychological coercion’ as well as forcibly made to take pictures of themselves in high end restaurants and hotels.
Once the photos were taken, the victims were instructed to post them online, pretending to be living prosperous lives in Canada. This was done to avoid drawing attention to themselves or revealing the traffickers' activities.
The raids are reported to have been initially carried out by law enforcement authorities in February, leading to the arrest of the traffickers. Authorities became aware of the traffickers' operations when two Ghanaian victims fell for the scam and were trafficked.
