50. Alestra Menendez
Director, Multilingual Initiatives, Amplify
Alestra Flores Menéndez’s journey began as a college retention counselor and livable wage organizer while an undergrad at UCLA. These experiences ignited her passion for transformative change. As the Director of Multilingual Initiatives at Amplify, she champions academic excellence for ALL students. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, she immersed herself in a new language and value system when she began teaching in Hawai‘i, embracing the principles of laulima (collaborative work) and pono (integrity).
Menéndez has worked across the US, Central and South America, and the Caribbean, bridging K-12 classrooms, universities, and global education collaborations. Her diverse career embodies her mission to spark potential, from founding art and media programs in rural Hawai`i to developing national science curricula, teaching first-generation students at UC Berkeley and incarcerated men at San Quentin Prison, and partnering with hundreds of school districts across the Americas. Her most meaningful role is the one she holds at home, raising her kind, creative, and thoughtful son and daughter. She carves out time to run, perform poetry, dance salsa, or curl up with a stack of unrelated books.
Menéndez continues her mission to humanize education and elevate diverse voices. Her forthcoming book, In the House of Flowers, traces a Salvadoran family in San Francisco's Mission District over five generations. Menéndez earned a Master's degree in Critical Environmental and Global Literacy from New College of California and an undergraduate degree in Latin American studies from UCLA.
