If you've ever ventured out to find the ultimate white T-shirt, you would be familiar with the near-impossible undertaking. 

Balancing endless variables, such as what shirt cut suits you best, whether or not the shirt is see-through and why that tag is so scratchy, makes the process brain numbingly painful. 

Thankfully, stylist and fashion expert Donny Galella has revealed the essential things you need to look for when buying this wardrobe, which makes the process considerably easier.

Speaking with Today Extra hosts Sylvia Jeffreys and David Campbell, the fashionista revealed: "I'm always looking for good quality cotton."

Galella says that having a soft fabric is crucial: "I want it to have a nice thickness but not too thick that I'm going to overheat," he explained before adding, "But not so thin that [it's] too sheer and see-through."

The stylist says he also wants a shirt with a good stretch so it "moulds nicely on the body, and you want it to be a good fit for your body."

While a white tee can be found in every Aussie wardrobe, they aren't all made the same, so finding the one for you can be tricky. 

Galella says if you're in the market for this staple, make sure you look for this specific detail on its tag. 

"Make sure it's 100 per cent cotton fabric," he said before revealing a handy tip for testing a shirt's transparency.  

"I always like to just put my hand underneath the tee and just check how thick, how sheer it is. If you can see your hand, [it's] too sheer. If you don't see your hand, you know it's a good thickness."

Once you have procured your perfect T-shirt, the next issue is keeping it white.

White shirts are the ideal catchment zone for makeup smudges and dribbles of spilt coffee, which is why you will find yourself constantly cleaning them. 

Galella says there are two important steps to follow before washing your shirt, suggesting firstly to "soak your whites in some baking soda and very hot water, leave it overnight or [for] a few hours."

If you have a stain on your shirt, the stylist suggests making a paste from baking soda, dishwashing liquid and lemon juice to lift the smaller spots.

"Make a paste, apply it to the stain, leave it for a little while, and then throw it into the wash. That should really work," he said.
