The never-forgetting, promise-keeping God

Published 3 weeks ago3 minute read

The book of Deuteronomy Chapter 7 is one of the series of sermons that Moses delivered to the people of God as they were preparing to enter into the Promised Land after 40 years of wandering in the wilderness. These discourses in the book of Deuteronomy were given to the generation of Israelites that were born during the wilderness wanderings, who had either been very young, or not yet born, when the law was first given to Israel. Thus the book is named “Deuteronomy,” which means “Second Law.”

Deuteronomy is a restatement of the Law of God. This generation needed to know that God was with them, just as He had promised to be with their fathers. They were about to lead a conquest into the land of Canaan and they needed divine assurance that they could depend on God, as they faced the people of Canaan. This passage of the Scripture was an assurance to the people of Israel that their God is a faithful God. They can trust His Word. They can believe His promises. They can depend on His power. He will see them through whatever may come their way. We need this same kind of reminder today. We are living in days when the people of God need to be sure they can trust in the Lord, despite whatever is happening around them.

Our God, the creator of Heaven and earth is the faithful and trustworthy God, who makes and keeps His promises. On the contrary, promise-keeping is an uncommon commodity among men.

Men hardly keep promises because of inborn unfaithfulness. But God is different. He keeps promises and shows mercies to those that love and obey Him. God’s faithfulness cannot be seen the same way our society views human faithfulness. We often want to treat our commitments more like a contract than a covenant.

A contract stipulates condition upon which an act of favour will be done. That is, if you do not fulfill your part, the other person will not fulfill his or her part. A covenant is very different. A covenant says: ‘I will completely fulfill my promises to you regardless of any condition upon which you fulfill yours.’

God is faithful to keep His promises.
For generations, God Had helped His chosen people. Despite the countless times they turned their backs on Him. God did not give them what they deserved. That is enough for anyone to celebrate His faithfulness. Not only does He never fails to show mercy, God never forgets His promise. No matter how big the promise, no matter how old the promise, our God is the never-forgetting, promise-keeping God. Ask Abraham (Genesis 12). God will always fulfill His promises to you. Because God is the never-forgetting, promise-keeping.

He never changes His mind or breaks His promises; rather, He remains steadfast and true throughout generations.

In Deuteronomy 7:9, we find a powerful declaration of God’s steadfast love, a love that transcends time and circumstance. This attribute of God’s faithfulness is echoed throughout the Bible. Psalm 119:90 (NLT) says: “Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in Heaven.” This verse encapsulates the steadfastness and immutability of God’s word. Just as God’s word is unchanging and eternal, so, is His love for us. It also speaks of God’s lavish and unfailing love towards those who love Him and obey His commands. This love is not conditional on our performance, but flows freely from His nature.
