TEWU has declared an indefinite strike over union representation dispute

The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has declared an indefinite strike, effective Thursday, July 3, 2025, citing what it describes as an “egregious and unjustifiable” move by authorities to recognise a minority union, TEWU-TUC, as the official representative on governing councils of traditional public universities.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 3, 2025, TEWU-GH leadership expressed worry over what they called a blatant disregard for democratic principles, claiming that their union holds majority membership across the institutions but has been sidelined in favour of a smaller union.

"We demand the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of TEWU-TUC's appointment as workers' representative on governing councils, given the blatant disregard for democratic principles and the rights of the majority union," it noted.

TEWU-GH further stressed the need for democratic processes to be upheld in union representation in tertiary institutions in the country.

"We call for the establishment of a clear, transparent, and democratic process for determining union representation in tertiary education institutions, ensuring that the voice of the majority is respected and reflected in governance structures," it stated.

The union also called on other labour unions, civil society groups, and the general public to support their cause, warning that the failure to resolve the issue threatens industrial harmony within Ghana’s public universities.

“We remain resolute and will not compromise on our demands,” the statement emphasised, urging all TEWU-GH members nationwide to participate fully in the strike and abide by the union’s strike guidelines.
