Taraba ALGON chairman reaffirms commitment to rural development
The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Taraba State chapter, Dr. Aminu Hassan Jauro, has restated his commitment to rural development as a means of addressing past neglect and supporting Governor Agbu Kefas’ drive to deliver the dividends of democracy across the state.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Jalingo on Tuesday, Jauro, who also doubles as the Chairman of Jalingo Local Government Council, said his passion for grassroots development is rooted in a desire to improve the lives of residents who had long suffered from inadequate government presence, especially in urban councils like Jalingo.
“Some of us decided to represent the people not for personal gain, but to change the narrative for good,” Jauro said. “Before I assumed office, the lack of government impact in Jalingo was worrisome. But by the grace of God, we have turned things around significantly.”
Jauro highlighted some of his administration’s key achievements, including educational support through free JAMB registration and provision of learning materials, in alignment with Governor Kefas’ free education policy.
He also noted the construction of culverts, bridges, and the grading of roads in strategic locations to ease transportation challenges.
In the health sector, he said several primary healthcare centres had been upgraded. At the same time, his administration also facilitated the offsetting of medical bills for indigent residents, enhancing healthcare delivery across the council.
To address youth unemployment and promote self-reliance, Jauro said the local government had completed a skills acquisition centre offering training in tailoring, bead making, soap production, poultry farming, catering, and computer literacy. “This initiative has taken many restive youths off the streets and empowered them with viable skills,” he added.
Jauro also revealed that 48 hand pump boreholes have been rehabilitated across the council’s ten wards to improve access to potable water and reduce the risk of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
On security, the chairman commended Governor Kefas’ leadership and disclosed that his council has worked closely with stakeholders and youth groups to enhance peace and stability within the area.
To boost local revenue and promote commerce, he said the council had embarked on the construction of plazas, the renovation of public infrastructure, and the creation of a conducive environment for traders and residents.
Jauro reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to continue working in synergy with the state government to uplift communities and ensure inclusive development across Jalingo and Taraba State as a whole.
