I must admit that I had to step outside of my comfort zone to play Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon because first-person games don't usually click with me. However, after playing it for hours and hours, I must admit that I ended up having a great time with this RPG throwback. For the unfamiliar, it's based on a 2019 board game and follows the legend of King Arthur and his kingdom which has definitely seen better days. Meanwhile, the campaign is extremely open-ended so if you prefer streamlined experiences then you may be put off by this. However, I enjoyed piecing things together while exploring and levelling up so it really depends on how much you enjoy this sort of freedom. Overall, if you're a fan of retro first-person RPGs that play it loose and allow for a lot of experimentation, definitely check it out. 👍 v1d30chumz 13-61-168-6
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon allows you to make your own character via a series of dialogue options and appearance settings. From this base, you can branch out into any direction by filling in many skill trees, boosting core attributes that allow you to equip different gear, and experimenting with different loadouts. Considering there's a huge variety of weapons, magic, armour, and accessories; optimising your character to your play style is satisfying stuff for sure. When you throw in item crafting, weapon enhancing with special items, cooking, and potion mixing then you're left with a lot of options to survive. Speaking of survival, chaos emerges at nightfall where the enemies intensify so you really have to give it your all whenever you're exploring the world around you. Save often, my good chum; that's my best advice! 💾

Combat in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is what you'd expect for such a game and I enjoyed the tactile feel when smashing enemies with my heavy weaponry which I preferred over the other types of arms. Exchanging blows only to eat food for a gradual healing boost and potions for a more immediate effect can create some impressively tense battles. Another aspect that's great is that you can stealthily sneak around which I succeeded doing a few times and you can also use long-range bows and arrows and cast magic spells to thwart your foes or give yourself a boost. With so many approaches you can take, defeating everything from zombies to living statues and thieves to noble knights is a lot of fun. With that in mind, I found combat to get a bit disorienting at times, especially when enemies are behind you so be careful. 😅
Now, this is my favourite aspect of Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon by far. Not only is traversing the world rewarding as you discover new fast-travel points and areas which rewards you with experience points, most areas are lovingly crafted to really stand out as special. For example, you'll sometimes see gorgeous otherworldly views in the distance, traverse ruins that feel alive and are inhabited by a sole hulking monstrosity, and fight mist-like foes when the fog rolls in. Sure, it's not as visually impressive as a lot of games but the sheer creativity on display definitely showcases the developers' passion for the game world which remains nothing short of imaginative and full of surprising amounts of detail. I wish that there weren't as many performance issues, though, such as plenty of stuttering so hopefully, it'll be patched soon. 🤞
Anyway, exploration is crucial because of the open-ended nature of the campaign which I ended up loving but I should mention that some parts can be frustratingly confusing such as one moment where you have to figure out how to befriend a group of warriors because if you don't, they'll slay you without issue every single time you wander into their encampment. I had to look up online how to pass that part. So, yes, the open-endedness is great but it can also be a bit too perplexing at times so keep that in mind before diving in. 🧭

It's time for the physical goodies; yay! comes in a massive box that has one of the coolest statues in my collection which is over 1 foot tall and is King Arthur standing on a pile of corpses. It's so badass! You also get a notebook that has gorgeous monochrome art throughout and an artbook which features tons of lovely images. There's also a stylish coin with unique sides and a fridge magnet that stands out and is super-strong. Next, there's a metal poster that you can stick on your wall with a 3M magnet that has stickiness on one side and a huge heavy-duty mouse and keyboard pad that features a map of the game world on it. All of these items are of very high quality so if you enjoy the core game and appreciate collector's items, definitely try to get your hands on this package. 🏆

With an impressive RPG throwback core game and oodles of high quality physical extras, offers one nostalgic package that any fan of dark fantasy role-playing will absolutely adore.
