In a recent game, Joey Meneses delivered a standout performance for Syracuse, driving in three runs with a crucial double on Saturday night. The Syracuse Mets emerged victorious against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs with a final score of 6-2 at Coca-Cola Park. Brandon Sproat, a highly regarded Mets prospect, also shone brightly, effectively retiring 13 of the 17 batters he faced.
The game's scoring began in the fourth inning when Billy McKinney walked, advanced to second on a Meneses single, and then capitalized on a throwing error by Otto Kemp to score the first run, putting Syracuse ahead 1-0. Despite Lehigh Valley starter Mick Abel's strong performance through four innings, allowing only two hits and one run with five strikeouts, Syracuse managed to break through in the fifth.
Gilberto Celestino led off the fifth with a single, followed by a walk from Jose Azocar and another walk from Jon Singleton, loading the bases. Meneses then stepped up and cleared the bases with a double, extending Syracuse's lead to 4-0. Lehigh Valley responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run, courtesy of a Cal Stevenson walk, a stolen base, and an RBI single by Justin Crawford, narrowing the score to 4-1. Gabriel Rincones Jr. then hit a solo home run in the sixth, further reducing Syracuse's lead to 4-2.
Syracuse added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings with solo home runs from Niko Goodrum and Donovan Walton, respectively, pushing the final score to 6-2. Sproat's pitching performance was a key factor in the win, as he pitched four and one-third innings, allowing just two hits, one run, and two walks while striking out six. The bullpen also played a crucial role, limiting Lehigh Valley to just two hits and one run for the remainder of the game.
The series between Syracuse and Lehigh Valley concludes with a double-header on Sunday afternoon. Jose Ureña is scheduled to make his Mets debut in game one, while Brandon Wadell is set to pitch for Syracuse in game two.
