Sydney Parrish has Been Key to Indiana's Success This Season
In her final year of college basketball, Sydney Parrish is being asked to do more than ever before.
The fifth-year senior is Indiana's second leading scorer and is averaging career highs in field goal attempts (9.3) and 3-point attempts (5.3) per game, along with minutes per game.
With more of Indiana's offense falling on her shoulders, Parrish has struggled to find consistency.
Despite being Indiana's second-leading scorer this season, she's below her career high 12 point per game average that she acheived as Indiana's third offensive option, behind Grace Berger and Mackenzie Holmes, two WNBA Draft picks.
Parrish has also had health issues this year, something that Teri Moren could hardly afford as she tries to get this program over the hump of losing program legends like Berger and Holmes.
The Hoosiers were able to hang on for a win against Baylor in the Battle 4 Atlantis when Parrish left with a knee injury in the second quarter of the November 24 matchup. With her out of the lineup entirely, Indiana turned in one of its worst performances of the season, failing to score 40 points in a loss to North Carolina.
Indiana was fortunate to play a stretch of lesser opponents while she recovered from the injury, but the team has not figured out how to consistently beat high-major opponents without Parrish playing something close to her best basketball.
This is especially true when it comes to Parrish's perimeter shooting. Indiana is 3-6 in games when Parrish shoots worse than her season average of 32.6% from beyond the arc.
Sunday's loss at Minnesota, who entered the game on a three-game losing streak and having lost seven-straight to Indiana, was a perfect example. Parrish scored just seven points in 32 minutes, going 1-6 from 3-point range. Indiana is 2-4 in games in which Parrish is held to fewer than 10 points this year, including the win at Baylor when she played but left with an injury.
For now, Indiana is at least pretty safely in the field for the 15-team Big Ten Tournament, but Moren will need Parrish to produce more consistently down the stretch for this team to reach its potential. In ESPN's last women's bracket watch, which was released before the loss at Minnesota, Indiana was listed as one of the last four byes.
There will be chances to cement a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a few big conference games left on the schedule, but Parrish and Indiana will have some work to do to earn a fifth straight bid to the Big Dance.
