Swanson and Suzuki Homer in Cubs' Victory Over Marlins

Dansby Swanson and Seiya Suzuki each delivered two-run home runs as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Miami Marlins 5-2 in the first game of their three-game series on Monday night. The Cubs' five-run surge in the fifth inning proved decisive, extending their franchise record to seven consecutive home series openers won this season.

Miguel Amaya had an impressive night, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Swanson contributed two hits, and Kyle Tucker added an RBI triple. Colin Rea (3-0) earned the win, pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on six hits. Drew Pomeranz closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning, securing his first save since 2020 and the 10th of his career.

For the Marlins, Derek Hill homered, but it wasn't enough to prevent their second straight loss and fourth in the last five games. Cal Quantrill (2-4) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

After being held to just one hit in the first four innings by Quantrill, the Cubs' offense exploded in the fifth. Nico Hoerner started the rally with a leadoff single and stole second. Swanson followed with a 400-foot home run to left-center, tying him with Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets for the most home runs by a shortstop in the majors with nine. Amaya then doubled down the left field line and scored on Tucker's triple to right field, increasing the lead to 3-0. Suzuki then hit a 413-foot home run to left-center, extending the Cubs' lead further.

The Marlins narrowed the gap to 5-2 in the seventh when Hill homered, driving in Ronny Simon, who had singled.
