Super Bowl Instant Replay: Paramount Is Wise to Make 'Final Reckoning' Tom Cruise's Last Mission

Published 2 months ago2 minute read

THE AD: Forget the final countdown—for Ethan Hunt, it’s the final reckoning. Tom Cruise’s globe-trotting super-spy takes one final run at preserving world peace in the eighth and—maybe?—last Mission: Impossible movie. Picking up from where Dead Reckoning left off, Ethan and his IMF team are in hot pursuit of a Russian submarine carrying a world-ending AI that’s not named Skynet.

MY HOT TAKE: This isn’t Ethan Hunt’s first last rodeo. The Mission: Impossible franchise seemed dead in the water after John Woo’s widely-ridiculed MI:2, resulting in a long hiatus until Cruise and J.J. Abrams re-piloted the series with the third installment. (By the way, Woo’s movie has aged pretty nicely over the years… apart from the Limp Bizkit music cue.)

Cruise was also supposed to step aside for Jeremy Renner following the fourth film, Ghost Protocol, but the star canceled his own retirement. That paved the way for the pretty good Rogue Nation and the freakin’ fantastic Fallout, after which Ethan could—and probably should—have gone out on top.

But Cruise and his partner-in-crime Christopher McQuarrie couldn’t resist going back for more, which is how we ended up with the belabored and bloated Dead Reckoning. Now, the duo have another chance to craft the perfect exit and based on this action-packed promo, they’re on track to deliver a fleeter and more focused adventure for the franchise farewell.
