Afenyo-Markin Questioned by CID Over Protest Scuffle

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has reported to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service regarding an alleged physical altercation with a police officer during the recent ‘Save the Judiciary’ protest in Accra. This follows a formal request to the Speaker of Parliament, allowing Afenyo-Markin to assist in the ongoing investigations after video footage of the confrontation circulated widely on social media.

The Ghana Police Service confirmed Afenyo-Markin's cooperation and disclosed that a second line of inquiry is underway following a formal petition filed by the MP, alleging he was assaulted by the officer. The protest, aimed at demanding the protection of judicial independence, resulted in tension between demonstrators and law enforcement, culminating in a scuffle involving Afenyo-Markin and a uniformed officer.

The police are conducting a fair, impartial, and thorough investigation into both the allegations against Afenyo-Markin and his counter-claim of assault. The MP for Effutu has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, for disciplinary action against Constable Forson, accusing him of assaulting him at the entrance to Parliament House during the protest.

The petition is dated 5th May and follows a viral video showing a heated confrontation between Afenyo-Markin and the police officer during the demonstration. The footage appears to show the Minority Leader striking the officer twice on the head with a handkerchief while being restrained by supporters.

The police noted that Afenyo-Markin’s cooperation is part of ongoing efforts to clarify the circumstances surrounding the clash between him and the police officer during the protest on May 5, 2025. The public will be updated as the case progresses.
