The management of Lakeside Estate has refuted reports that the entire estate was flooded following the heavy downpour on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

In a statement sighted by GhanaWeb, the management clarified that only a section of the estate, specifically near the bridge connecting Community 5 to Community 6, was affected by flooding.

They explained that the stream near the bridge overflowed its banks, resulting in flooding in areas along the Madina Institute of Technology.

"The attention of the management of Lakeside Estate has been drawn to a news item carried out by Citi FM to the effect that Lakeside Estate was flooded during the last rains that hit Accra and its environs on Sunday 18th of May 2025, which caused flooding in most parts of Accra.

The said news item sought to give the general public an impression that the entire or a greater part of the estate got flooded, which actually was not the case. Lakeside Estate is made up of communities starting from Community One to Community Thirteen,” part of the statement reads.

The statement further clarified, “It was actually the bridge that connects Community Five (5) and Community Six (6) where the stream overflowed its banks and caused flooding in the area, spreading to the Madina Institute of Technology and some of the residents who live along the university bridge."

Management also blamed the flooding on the construction of a filling station near the bridge, stating that it had narrowed the natural waterway and contributed to the overflow.

They noted that they had petitioned the authorities to assess the location of the station, but no substantial action has been taken.

“In 2023, the company wrote to the National Petroleum Authority and the Adenta Municipal Assembly objecting to the construction of the fuel station at the edge of the bridge, but the National Petroleum Authority, in their letter dated 16 January 2024, replied that they had studied the location and had granted them a permit to site the fuel station and would keep the station under surveillance to ensure compliance with standards in the interest of the health, security and safety of the community.”

The statement added that a similar complaint to the district assembly had also yielded no results.
