Spider-Man: Brand New Day Announced as Title for Next Installment; Beyond the Spider-Verse Delayed

The Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony's Spider-Man Universe are buzzing with exciting updates for fans of both Tom Holland's live-action Spider-Man and the animated Spider-Verse saga. Here's a detailed breakdown of the latest news and what to expect in the coming years.

Tom Holland's fourth solo Spider-Man film has been officially titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The announcement was made at CinemaCon 2025, where director Destin Daniel Cretton (known for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) shared his enthusiasm for the project. Holland himself appeared via video, apologizing for his absence due to filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and teased that the new film represents a "fresh start" for Peter Parker.

Filming is slated to begin in the summer of 2025, with the movie hitting theaters on July 31, 2026. This places it between the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on the MCU release schedule.

Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, the writing duo behind Spider-Man: No Way Home, are returning to pen the script. While Jon Watts, who directed the previous Holland Spider-Man films, will not be returning, Destin Daniel Cretton's direction promises a fresh perspective on the beloved character. Cretton hinted at an emotional story and a unique ride that audiences haven't seen before, emphasizing the team's dedication to pushing the boundaries of Spider-Man's cinematic adventures.

While Tom Holland is confirmed to reprise his role as Peter Parker, other cast members are yet to be officially confirmed. However, Zendaya (MJ) and Jacob Batalon (Ned) are widely expected to return. Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, has reportedly joined the cast in a mystery role, sparking speculation that she may portray Jean Grey/Phoenix from the X-Men. There are also reports that the film will feature a female villain, described as powerful and imposing, as well as two new male characters.

The title Brand New Day is a nod to the 2008 comic book storyline, which controversially erased Peter Parker’s marriage to Mary Jane Watson. Given the ending of No Way Home, where Peter's identity was erased from everyone's memory, the film may draw inspiration from this storyline, presenting a drastically altered reality for Peter. Producer Amy Pascal has indicated that the film will focus on Peter giving up his personal life to fully embrace his role as Spider-Man.

The anticipation for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is immense, driven by the critical and commercial success of the previous films. Spider-Man: Homecoming grossed $880 million, Spider-Man: Far From Home generated $1.13 billion, and Spider-Man: No Way Home became a post-pandemic blockbuster with $1.9 billion globally. Tom Holland expressed his gratitude to theater owners for their support of the Spider-Man movies, acknowledging their vital role in the franchise's success.

On the animated front, Sony has officially announced the release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The film is now scheduled to premiere on June 4, 2027, a significant delay from its originally planned 2024 release.

The delay is attributed to the complex and demanding animation process required for the Spider-Verse films. These movies utilize multiple animation styles simultaneously, each demanding meticulous attention to detail. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had the largest animation crew in movie history, with over a thousand animators. Additionally, the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes further impacted production timelines.

Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson are directing the sequel, based on a script by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham. Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld are confirmed to return as Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, respectively. Plot details remain scarce, but co-writer Phil Lord has teased that the film will be even bigger than the previous two, serving as a massive finale to the trilogy. A brief sneak peek shown at CinemaCon featured Miles declaring, "Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. I’m gonna do my own thing."

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) have garnered critical acclaim and commercial success. Into the Spider-Verse won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, while Across the Spider-Verse was also nominated for the award. Both films have been praised for their innovative animation, engaging stories, and diverse characters.

With Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on the horizon, Spider-Man fans have much to look forward to. The blend of live-action and animation, coupled with compelling narratives and dynamic characters, ensures that Spider-Man will remain a dominant force in the superhero genre for years to come.
