Spain leads European push for sanctions against Israel over Gaza war
Spain is spearheading European efforts to pressure Israel into ending its war on Gaza, advocating for international sanctions against the occupying regime.
According to IRNA, ahead of a key meeting in Madrid on Sunday, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares urged decisive action to halt Israel’s ongoing offensive. The gathering will bring together representatives from 20 European and Arab countries, alongside international organizations, to discuss measures to address the crisis.
In an interview with France Info radio, Albares emphasized the pressing need to stop the war, arguing that it "no longer has any goal." He also underscored the importance of allowing humanitarian aid into Gaza without restrictions, stating, “Aid must enter Gaza massively, unimpeded, neutrally, so that it is not Israel who decides who can eat and who cannot.”
His remarks follow a worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where an aid blockade has severely restricted access to food, water, fuel, and medicine.
The Madrid conference builds on last year’s summit, which included Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Ireland, and Norway—countries that have recognized Palestinian statehood.
Amid the European Union’s recent decision to reassess its cooperation agreement with Israel, Albares called for further action, declaring, “We must consider sanctions, we must do everything, consider everything to stop this war.”
