Soyinka urges Tinubu to probe Kudirat Abiola, Ige, Dele Giwa's deaths
Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has urged the President Bola Tinubu administration to conduct an investigation into the strange circumstances that followed the deaths of Kudirat Abiola, Chief Bola Ige, and journalist, Dele Giwa.
Soyinka stated that some Nigerians could provide clues into what had led to the untimely deaths of these prominent people who stood up gallantly to the military, and democratic principles that the nation enjoys today.
Speaking at the celebration of the nation’s Democracy Day in Abuja, Soyinka made a case for those who played massive roles but were not recognized for their efforts.
While he praised the national honours given to some by Tinubu, he, however, noted several omissions of heroes from the list, adding that he believed the honoured participants represented the rest of the people in the struggle.
Soyinka revealed that he will dedicate his honours to the memory of the Late Beko Ransom-Kuti, whom he described as a defender of human rights, a champion of good governance, and a campaigner for democracy, who was detained and jailed several times by the Nigerian military.
He warned that no one should make light of the weight and importance of the June 12 struggle, as many people died, and many others were greatly injured by the military junta, which killed, tortured, and imprisoned Nigerians at the time.
