Sowore Slams Labour Party As Worst Opposition In Nigeria, Says It's Just An APC Tool | Sahara Reporters

Sowore stated that, according to their research findings, most of the remaining political parties, excluding the AAC, were established by major parties and are often referred to as feeder parties or special-purpose vehicles.

Human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, has described the Labour Party as the worst opposition party in Nigeria, alleging that it operates more like an extension of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) than a true ideological alternative.

Speaking on the Rubbin’ Minds programme on Channels TV with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Sunday, Sowore criticised the structure of opposition in the country and called out political parties that claim to oppose the ruling government.

Regarding a question about whether he was not guilty of the coalition going in Nigeria, Sowore stated, “I'm not guilty for a particular reason. And it is that the blame does not go to him alone. I'm talking about (President Bola) Tinubu and his party. It goes to show how they are manipulating what they call ‘opposition’. And the rest go to the rest of us, who are supposed to be opposed to evil, who are either complacent or complicit.

“And the first one I want to address is what they call opposition in Nigeria. Our party is one of the 18 parties left registered and when we go to party meetings, particularly with the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), you can tell, and I'm saying it for those who may not know, that there's no opposition party except us - African Action Congress (AAC) party - in those meetings. They are always in alliance with the government.”

Sowore stated that, according to their research findings, most of the remaining political parties, excluding the AAC, were established by major parties and are often referred to as feeder parties or special-purpose vehicles.

He disclosed that when preparing for an election, the ruling often funds candidates in these other parties, with some of those candidates or parties positioned specifically to support them in legal challenges.

He said, “So they all go and challenge the election. And whoever has won would approach either the opposition party or the smaller parties and settle them, and everybody gets paid and walks away. And they will hang around.

“The other part is that the parties are not opposed ideologically to the ruling party because they own most of them. And so, we are always not only against the APC when we go to meetings. In fact, the people that oppose us when we go to meetings are these other smaller parties that we think are the opposition, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“The Labour Party (LP), I would say, is the worst. When it comes to the party, when these small party candidates are moving to the APC, they've always been very excited about belonging to the APC.

“In fact, that's why I refer to the Labour Party as a short-term renter. You know, most of the people that went to the Labour Party saw an opportunity; they were coming from either PDP or APC, they walked in there, grabbed.

“And then the moment they had the goody bag, they went back to where they were coming from. Or they went to the switcher pad.”

The activist described PDP chieftains who attend party meetings as mere "yes men."

He said, “This is what they do in meetings with INEC and in those meetings that we have. They're also doing that publicly. So there's no ideological difference.

“On our part, because we cannot overlook that, we're small, compact, but we don't have money. We don't have money to compete with them. We don't have the connections to do this.

“We don't have the resources to do the wrong things that they do, and if we do, we won't do it. And they know that. So they keep ensuring that we don't have the capacity in terms of manpower to do the evil they do. Because they know if we do, there's no way they can get away with it.”

“So what I want to say, importantly, is that most of the opposition you see and you call opposition, they created it so as to give you the impression that there's opposition,” he added.
