Snoafers Lead 2025 Footwear Trends from Loafers to Sneakers

In the dynamic realm of fashion hybrids, where concepts like skorts, jeggings, and shackets have emerged, a new footwear trend is making significant waves: snoafers. This innovative style combines the cushioned sole of a sneaker with the classic upper of a loafer, resulting in a versatile, comfortable business-casual shoe designed for widespread wear. Despite initially facing criticism due to their unconventional appearance, snoafers have rapidly transformed into a viral breakout category, capturing the attention of major sneaker brands and consumers alike.
Leading brands such as New Balance, Hoka, and Puma have seen their snoafer models sell out swiftly, often reappearing on online marketplaces at vastly inflated prices since last year. Nike, though a late entrant to this trend, recently launched its Air Max Phenomena through its Serena Williams Design Crew apprenticeship program. Prior to its official release, this $155 snoafer was fetching prices as high as $500 on StockX, generating considerable buzz for Nike following a period of sluggish sales.
Drew Haines, senior marketplace director at the resale platform StockX, highlighted that in a global footwear market valued at $457 billion and saturated with traditional sneakers, consumers are actively seeking something distinctive. He noted an increased receptiveness among sneaker enthusiasts to the unconventional silhouettes being developed by a wider array of brands. This trend signals an encouraging environment for footwear designers eager to experiment and carve out unique niches in an increasingly competitive market.
Fashion trends are often characterized by their fleeting nature, a phenomenon further amplified by social media-driven culture, compelling companies to continuously innovate. Haines believes that brands will increasingly embrace risks, producing and releasing products that venture beyond traditional designs, as such moves tend to resonate strongly with consumers. New Balance is largely credited with popularizing the snoafer silhouette, having launched its 1906L model in September.
Charlotte Lee, a design manager at New Balance, expressed delight at the 1906L's broad appeal, extending beyond just sneaker aficionados. She stated that the model has opened up a new design space for the company, which they plan to explore further with upcoming releases of new colors and materials. While specific sales figures were not disclosed, the 1906L quickly sold out online in the U.S., and demand has remained robust beyond the initial drop. Lee emphasized New Balance's aim to challenge traditional perceptions of loafers by fusing sneaker performance with the dressier aesthetic of formal footwear, creating a product that aligns with modern lifestyles.
Other brands have also successfully entered the snoafer market. Hoka, renowned for its running shoes, currently has its all-gender Speed Loafer, retailing at $185, sold out. Puma introduced its Sophyr loafer last year, which remains sold out in multiple sizes. Nike-owned Converse has also joined the fray, unveiling its All-Star Coinloafer in the U.S. in June, building on variations that have been available in Japan since 2022, according to Women’s Wear Daily.
The hype surrounding snoafers shows no signs of abating. Online searches for New Balance’s 1906L surged by 3,700% on StockX since the first quarter of last year, even before its release. Consumers like Kelly Baartman, a 27-year-old content creator from South Africa, praise the hybrid's versatility, stating, “I love wearing a sneaker and I love wearing a loafer. To see that concept come together, just based on my personal style, I was like, ‘Oh, this is literally perfect.’” Angel Edme, a content creator from Brooklyn, appreciates brands taking creative risks, describing her 1906Ls as “something different” that felt “fresh and playful.”
The impact of the snoafer trend is also being observed by major apparel companies. Mark Breitbard, president and CEO of the Gap brand, noted that the loafer is experiencing a significant comeback in all forms. Gap considers trending shoe styles when designing its jeans to ensure their clothing complements contemporary footwear choices, further underscoring the widespread influence of this novel hybrid shoe.
