Ablekuma North Rerun Election Scheduled for July 11

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is set to conduct a rerun of parliamentary polls in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra region on Friday, July 11, 2025. This decision is a concerted effort by the EC to resolve the prolonged impasse surrounding the constituency's election results, which has left the area without a duly elected Member of Parliament since the December 7 general election.
The core of the dispute originated from the collation process after the December 7 polls, during which physical pink sheets were reportedly destroyed by political party supporters who stormed the collation centre. Consequently, 37 scanned pink sheets, primarily provided by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), were used for collation. The EC convened meetings with representatives from both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP on June 12 and July 1 or 2, 2025, to discuss the contentious issues. Despite these discussions, both major contenders maintained their respective positions.
The National Democratic Congress advocated for a complete rerun in all 37 polling stations, asserting that the scanned pink sheets used lacked proper verification and were solely submitted by the NPP. Conversely, the New Patriotic Party insisted that the results from the remaining three outstanding polling stations should be collated and a winner declared, arguing that NDC agents had already verified the scanned pink sheets in question. The NPP candidate for Ablekuma North is Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, while Ewurabena Aubyn is the NDC candidate.
After careful deliberation, the Electoral Commission announced its decision to proceed with a rerun in 19 of the 37 disputed polling stations. This determination was based on the fact that while agents from both political parties had approved these 19 scanned polling station results during collation, the crucial verification and confirmation by their respective Presiding Officers could not be secured. In contrast, 18 other scanned polling station results were successfully verified and confirmed by the Presiding Officers and also approved by agents of both parties; therefore, a rerun will not be held in those specific locations.
The Electoral Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and upholding electoral integrity throughout this process. It has also urged the Ghana Police Service to provide adequate security measures for the rerun on July 11, 2025, to ensure a peaceful, credible, and conclusive electoral exercise in the Ablekuma North constituency.
