The Accra West Region of Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has initiated a temporary shutdown of the Weija Water Treatment Plant to conduct urgent and essential repairs on major pipelines. This critical maintenance began at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, and is projected to conclude by 5:00 p.m. on the same day. The primary objective of these emergency works is to rectify critical faults within the pipeline network and to guarantee the long-term reliability and consistency of water supply to the affected communities.

As a direct consequence of this necessary intervention, numerous areas within western Accra will experience significant disruptions to their water supply. The communities impacted include Korle-Bu, Dansoman, Mamprobi, parts of Weija, Gbawe, Malam, Anyaa, Kwashieman, Ablekuma, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Tesano, Odorkor, Sowutuom, Lapaz, parts of Achimota, the North Industrial Area, and all surrounding neighbourhoods. GWL has officially issued an apology for the inconvenience caused to residents and has strongly advised them to conserve water during the outage. Engineers are diligently working on-site to ensure the repairs are completed within the scheduled timeframe, with normal water supply expected to be restored once the works are finalized.

This current shutdown follows a period of operational challenges at the Weija Treatment Plant. In September 2023, GWL received four new pumps aimed at boosting the plant’s daily average production capacity, which is designed to be 120,000 cubic meters, equating to approximately 26 million gallons of water per day. The treatment plant, which facilitates raw water abstraction through two intake stations, has, however, faced recent setbacks. Over the past three months, issues with some of the older pumps at these intake stations have led to a substantial reduction in production, down to an estimated 20 percent of its total capacity, translating to roughly 5 million gallons daily. These ongoing efforts underscore GWL's commitment to addressing infrastructural issues and ensuring improved water service delivery.
