Skytopia music videos

Responses by Ikuho Tamura, graphic designer and video artist.

I began this project in collaboration with the artist and music producer SKYTOPIA with the goal of expanding the boundaries of our respective forms of expression. By developing the music and visuals in parallel, we set out to explore compelling visual and sonic possibilities that we have not yet been able to reach through client work.

We created countless prototypes, selecting those that resonated with both of us. Starting from these prototypes, we refined and elevated them into a compelling collaboration of visuals and music with a sense of cohesion and intent.

We were constantly challenged to push our creative expression beyond what we had already established in our portfolios. In the process of creating the prototypes, we spent a great deal of time exploring new techniques and experimenting with unfamiliar tools, seeking to expand our own skills and sensibilities.

This project blends a variety of tools and textures, including 3-D CGI, vector art and typography. While experimenting with cross-disciplinary forms of expression, we drew on our background in graphic design to achieve a polished, refined aesthetic.

While we had previously worked on motion posters in our past careers, this was our first attempt at approaching a video project in the form of a music video. Through this experience, we were able to establish a workflow—including fundamental aspects such as scheduling, project planning and communication.

In this project, the music and visuals were developed in parallel, which let us approach the work with a sense of freedom and openness. As a result, I believe the visuals turned out to be some of the freshest and most original I have made in my career.
