Simon Pegg Credits James Doohan's Legacy for Completing His Nerd Hat Trick

Published 1 day ago3 minute read

Millions of people know Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn from the Mission: Impossible franchise or Hugh Campbell from The Boys. However, there are a ton of other projects that also featured Pegg in notable roles, which people may have forgotten about.

Completing what he calls the ultimate nerd hat trick, Simon Pegg was once a part of the Star Trek franchise as Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott. Portraying the iconic role across two movies, Pegg found fame for being a part of the Star Trek franchise (and later the Star Wars franchise as well). However, for Pegg, it was all just a homage to veteran actor James Doohan.

For those unversed, James Doohan was a Canadian actor who found worldwide fame and acclaim for his role as Montgomery Scott in the television series and the movies in the Star Trek franchise.

When Pegg joined the Star Trek franchise with the first reboot back in 2009, Pegg didn’t exactly know what he was getting into. The role of Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott was given to Pegg, who had to look up a few references to get the character right.

During a career profiling with GQ, the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning star revealed that all of his time as Scott in the Star Trek franchise was because of James Doohan.

Scotty is such an iconic character, and that’s not anything to do with me; that’s to do with James Doohan, who brought the character to the screen in the first place and made him such a beloved sort of feature within the Star Trek TV series and latterly the movies.

It was thanks to the acting and capabilities of James Doohan that Simon Pegg was able to follow, and the world found themselves falling in love with another Scotty in the Star Trek franchise.

Being a part of the Star Trek universe helped accomplish an achievement to what he refers to as the “ultimate nerd hat trick”. We do agree with the words that Pegg… has done it all.

Back in 2005, the actor was given a chance to portray a role in the BBC show Doctor Who as a guest appearance. Simon Pegg immediately agreed to the fact and starred in an episode of Doctor Who in the role of The Editor.

The actor thought nothing of it until 2009 when he was asked to portray the role of Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in Star Trek (the film). The actor continued to portray his role in Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond.

But just before his reprisal in Star Trek Beyond, the actor was offered a role in the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Simon Pegg portrayed the role of Unkar Plutt in the 2015 movie, which went on to earn a whopping $2 billion at the global box office (via IMDb)!

While speaking to Graham Norton on The Graham Norton Show (via Radio Times), Pegg revealed that his inclusion in the three mega franchises has resulted in him finishing the ultimate nerd hat trick.

I’ve now done the ultimate nerd hat trick – Doctor Who, Star Wars and Star Trek.

Well, the actor has indeed done some amazing projects throughout his rich Hollywood career, including The Boys and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

Star Trek (2009), one of the ultimate nerd hat trick franchises, which starred Simon Pegg as Scotty, currently stands at a rating of 7.9/10 on IMDb and a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

is currently available to stream on Paramount+ (USA).
