Siena Scagliola's RBI double rallies Glen Cove to Nassau AA title - Newsday
Glen Cove coach Kim Kessel acknowledged that her team “likes to keep it interesting”.
The Big Red endured a heartbreaking 11-inning walk-off loss in Game 1 and a thrilling no-hitter in Game 2 by pitcher Brooke Simmons. Down a run in their final turn at bat, Glen Cove certainly made the series finale a bit interesting.
Glen Cove scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning of a 2-1 win over MacArthur in Game 3 of the Nassau Class AA softball finals at Farmingdale State on Monday night. This is Glen Cove’s first county championship win since 1985.
"It felt like an emotional roller-coaster during this series," Simmons said. "We always tell each other to keep your emotions in check, but today especially, it was hard to do."
Simmons doubled to lead off the top of the seventh. She advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on Mia Lupinski’s single through a drawn-in infield.
“One thing about Glen Cove softball is we’re not out of the game until it’s officially over,” Lupinski said. “We do whatever it takes to win. I wasn’t ready for our season to be over.”
Julia Petrizzo’s sacrifice bunt moved Lupinski to second and Siena Scagliola doubled to give Glen Cove a 2-1 lead. Glen Cove took the lead with those four batters seeing just six pitches.
“The crowd was going crazy and I had to tune it out,” Scagliola said. “As soon as my bat hit the ball, I knew it was dropping.”
A two-out error and two passed balls gave MacArthur a runner on third in the bottom of the seventh. Simmons induced a pop-up that first baseman Natalie Weigand caught for the final out.
“There were no nerves in that moment, just excitement. Even if she scored, it was just tying the game,” Simmons said. “I was just excited knowing we came this far and I knew we were going to pull it off.”
Alex Livanos kept Glen Cove (14-10) hitless for the first five innings. Isabella Damiano led off the sixth inning with a single for Glen Cove but was stranded at third.
Hailey Trapani singled to lead off the fourth and stole second for MacArthur (11-15). She attempted to advance to third on a fly ball and an error on the play allowed her to score the game’s first run.
Glen Cove will face East Islip in the Long Island Class AA championship/regional semifinal at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Farmingdale State.
“Glen Cove softball has been my life over the past 32 years,” said Kessel, who played five years for the program. “I’ve wanted this for a very long time.”
