Shia Islam deeply rooted in Quranic teachings: Iranian cleric

An Iranian cleric has dismissed allegations that Shia Muslims are disconnected from the Quran, calling such claims a longstanding fabrication by adversaries of Islam.

Hojat-ol-Islam Seyyed Abdolfattah Navvab, the Leader’s representative in Hajj affairs and head of the Iranian Hajj delegation, rejected a “fabricated notion” that Shia Islam lacks a connection to the Quran.

Speaking on Sunday, May 19, during a meeting with members of the Noor Quranic Convoy in Medina, Navvab stated, “The enemies have tried to portray Shiites as only attached to the Ahl al-Bayt (AS) while having no link to the Quran. But the conduct of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), the teachings of Shia scholars, and the foresight of Imam Khomeini and the Leader of the Islamic Revolution have neutralized this propaganda.”

Navvab cited historical examples to highlight the deep-rooted reverence for the Quran within Shia tradition. “Take the case of Fizza, the maidservant of Lady Fatima Zahra (SA), who was known to speak only in Quranic verses for over two decades. Or consider a more recent example—when the young Iranian Quran memorizer Seyyed Mohammad Hossein Tabatabaei visited Saudi Arabia, he answered all questions using Quranic references, astonishing many officials in attendance.”

Pointed to the need to constantly strengthen the bond with the Quran, he added, “Innovative approaches are needed to deepen this connection; while audience size matters, the true focus must be on the quality and impact of Quranic programs.

The Noor Quranic Convoy, which Navvab met with, is part of Iran’s broader initiative to enhance the spiritual experience of pilgrims by organizing Quran-related events during Hajj. Each year, Iran sends a team of qaris and memorizers to accompany pilgrims to Mecca and Medina.

In 2025, the convoy includes 20 members—14 qaris, one Quran memorizer, and a five-member Tawasheeh (religious chorus) group. They are scheduled to hold over 220 Quranic sessions throughout the pilgrimage period in the holy cities.

Navvab also urged members of the convoy to focus on promoting Islamic values through their recitations. “In Medina, qaris should emphasize the ethics and character of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A single verse, when reflected upon, can transform a person’s life,” he said. “In Mecca, the focus should be on the legacy of Prophet Abraham (AS), the founder of the Kaaba.”
