Scorching Saturday: Ahmedabad hits 43°C, depression recedes
Ahmedabad: The city continued to sizzle, and how! The day temperature hit a scorching 43°C on Saturday, marking it as one of the hottest day this May. Even the minimum temperature remained elevated at 30.3°C, two degrees above normal.
While humidity started high at 61% in the morning, it dropped significantly to 24% by late afternoon, offering slight relief.Ahmedabad shared the top spot as the hottest city in Gujarat with Bhuj, both recording 43°C. Other hotspots included Gandhinagar (42.8°C), Rajkot (42.7°C), and Surendranagar (42.4°C).Meanwhile, the weather system, which was believed to take the form of a deep depression or cyclone, is now unlikely to approach Gujarat, indicated the India meteorological department (IMD) bulletin.
It mentioned that the depression over the east-central Arabian Sea adjoining the south Konkan coast moved slowly eastward on Saturday and is likely to cross the south Konkan coast near Ratnagiri soon for a landfall.
After the landfall, it may move eastwards towards central Maharashtra and weaken gradually into a well-marked low-pressure area, added the bulletin.The monsoon's steady advance is bringing welcome rain to other parts of India.
On Saturday, its northern limit stretched through Karwar and Shimoga in Karnataka, and Dharmapuri and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.Ahmedabad can expect some relief, with the IMD forecasting chances of light to moderate rain with gusty winds on Sunday, although the maximum temperature is still predicted to reach 43°C. Other areas of Gujarat are in for more significant rainfall. Heavy downpours are likely on Sunday in Narmada, Surat, Dang, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, and Gir Somnath. Light to moderate thunderstorms are also expected across all districts of South Gujarat and several in Saurashtra and Central Gujarat, with rainfall likely to continue until May 28.
