Save on Dinner at Etta, Maha, Estelle and More Melbourne Hotspots

Published 6 days ago5 minute read

The Melbourne chill is settling in. But that’s no reason to retreat to your sofa with the delivery apps until spring. To help you avoid hibernation, NAB is offering credit card holders $100 off dinner at some of Melbourne’s best restaurants.

Gather your crew, spend or more $500 and pay with your NAB credit card at hotspots like Etta, Estelle, Longrain, Smith St Bistrot, Maha and many more to get $100 off the bill. The offer doesn’t end with winter, running from June 23 through to December 16. The only hard part? Coordinating your group’s calendars. Here’s what’s on the menus (and what we’re ordering right through to summertime).

Settle in. This neighbourhood wine bar offers one of Melbourne’s essential dining experiences. You’re in the safe hands of restaurateur Hannah Green and head chef (and fermentation expert) Lorcán Kan – who met while working at Attica. For dinner, start with skewers in combos like prawns with lime pickle, tea quail egg with pickled lotus root, or torched kingfish with blackened blood orange. Kan uses wood like red gum over an open flame to cook bigger dishes like Cantonese-style barbeque pork, crisp duck leg and rare beef with sambal and sebago potatoes. Order a bit of everything and share it among friends. Or, if you’re celebrating a special occasion for two, push the boat out with the set menu with champagne. It’ll put you squarely at $500. Last year, Sydney hospo heroes Ross and Sunny Lusted finally put down restaurant roots in Melbourne. (They’re also behind Sydney’s Woodcut and now-closed fine diner The Bridge Room.) If you need an excuse to try Marmelo, their sprawling Portuguese restaurant, this is it. It’s always a salty start here with the salgados (salty snacks) menu. Pick from caviar, salted Murray cod croquettes and a plate of Spain’s Conservas Angelachu anchovies – considered among the best in the world. We’re basically on the Iberian Peninsula now, so it’d be rude to ignore seafood-centric dishes like yellow fin tuna with bottarga cream or calamari with goat milk butter. You could also choose to use up the dining budget with a whole wood-roasted southern rock lobster. And tap into the glass wine cellar that houses lesser-known Iberian producers. Book a table here.

You might recognise Maha’s owner-chef Shane Delia. The prolific restaurateur hosted SBS cooking shows Spice Journey and Middle East Feast, and has appeared on Masterchef. But in Melbourne, it’s worth trying his food at the Middle Eastern hotspot Maha (and its sibling venues Maha North and Maha East). The kitchen spins chickpeas, tahini, nuts, saffron, preserved lemon and other Middle Eastern staples into unfussy, surprising dishes. Dinner is a set menu ($135pp), so you’ve only got one decision to make. The signature is 12-hour lamb shoulder with za’atar and pine nuts, while other highlights include whipped hummus, Turkish-style beef dumplings and the sweet Turkish delight-filled doughnuts. Longrain has longevity. The Thai institution started in Sydney in 1999 and finally arrived in Melbourne in 2005. Today, it’s still one of the city’s best Thai restaurants. Celebrated restaurateur Scott Pickett (also behind Matilda, Estelle and more) runs the place, serving contemporary Thai food that’s best experienced in the signature banquet. Dig into classics like poached prawn in betel leaf, caramelised five-spice pork hock, and som tum (green papaya salad). If you’re after something more casual, head upstairs to sibling bar Longsong, which offers boozy cocktails and snacky Thai street food. Book your table here.

In a city filled with wine bars, Circl Wine House stands out for its focus on food as much as its wine list. With more than 150 wines available to try by the glass, and plenty more by the bottle, it’s an oenophile’s playground. Smaller pours let you try a range of whites, reds and everything in between (the offer excludes Circl Wine House’s rare collection). A Scandinavian-inspired menu complements the 1500-deep wine library. Snack on a goat’s cheese eclair and a smoked eel tart while you sip. Or lean into hearty mains like whole rainbow trout or Blackmore Wagyu tri tip steak with cafe de Paris butter. There’s also a cheese section, all served with accoutrements and supplied by Victor Persinette-Gautrez’s K-Sein Fromagerie of South Melbourne Market. Book your table here.
