Safaricom's Revenue Milestone in Eastern Africa

Safaricom PLC has reported significant financial growth for the year ending March 2025. The company's net profit increased to KSh 45.8 billion, up from KSh 42.6 billion the previous year. Total revenue surpassed KSh 300 billion, reaching KSh 388.7 billion, making Safaricom the first listed company in Eastern Africa to achieve this milestone. This represents an 11.2% growth in total revenue for the financial year 2024/25.
The financial statement for the year ending March 30, 2025, indicates a 10.8% growth in net income, amounting to KSh 69.8 billion. Safaricom has announced a dividend payout of KSh 48.08 billion, which includes a final ordinary share payment of 65 cents, in addition to the interim 55 cents already paid.
Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa credits this growth to sustained innovation in the company's product portfolio, expansion into Ethiopia, and ongoing support to communities. The Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) also saw substantial growth, increasing by 29.5% to reach KSh 104.1 billion.
The company's expansion into Ethiopia has shown promising results, contributing almost 10% to the group’s revenue. Safaricom anticipates its Ethiopian subsidiary will become profitable by the financial year 2027. Safaricom Ethiopia has more than doubled its customer base to 8.8 million, with over 3,141 operational sites. Additionally, 2.4 million customers in Ethiopia are actively using M-Pesa services, with transactions exceeding KSh 20.6 billion during the reviewed year.
In Kenya, service revenue grew by 10.5% to KSh 364.3 billion. M-Pesa, now 18 years old, recorded a 15.2% increase, generating KSh 161.1 billion, which accounts for 44.2% of Kenya’s service revenue. The connectivity business in Kenya, including voice, SMS, and data, grew by 6.5% to KSh 185.2 billion, contributing 50.8% of the service revenue. Mobile data revenue saw a 15.2% increase, reaching KSh 72.9 billion due to increased 4G adoption, while voice revenue increased by 1.6% to KSh 80.8 billion.
The Safaricom Group's net profit after tax increased by 7.3% to KSh 45.8 billion, up from KSh 42.6 billion in the previous year. Safaricom Kenya's profit also grew to KSh 94.9 billion, from KSh 82.6 billion, during the same period.
