SA risks new energy crisis as coal plants power down

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa is once again staring down a potential energy crisis, and experts say the clock is ticking.

As ageing coal plants head for decommissioning, the country isn’t adding renewables fast enough to avoid future shortfalls. 

A recent report reveals a potential 4-gigawatt energy shortfall by 2030 as coal plants retire and demand escalates.

Energy expert Professor Hartmut Winkler says solar and wind are our best bet, but we need to act fast before the lights go out for good.
