Roads Minister inaugurates committee to review activities of axle load operations
The committee includes representatives from the National Security, Private Haulage Operators, the Ghana Highway Authority, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ghana Standards Authority.
A press release signed by Mr. Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Head of the Public Relations Unit, stated that the committee was expected to identify systemic and operational issues that required reforms, interrogate any violations of regulatory provisions, evaluate the management of collected fines, and provide suitable recommendations to improve the programme.
“Overloading heavy cargo vehicles has been identied as a major factor in the premature deterioration of road pavements and increased trac accidents,” he stated.
The statement noted that as a result, the ministry was seeking to reform the Axle Load Control Programme, which was facing numerous operational challenges.
He assured the public of the ministry’s commitment to enhancing road safety and mitigating overloading to ensure road pavements fulfil their intended lifespan.
