Riverhounds Upset New York City FC in U.S. Open Cup

On May 7, 2025, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds secured a 1-0 victory against New York City FC (NYCFC) in the Round of 32 of the U.S. Open Cup. The decisive goal was scored by Beto Ydrach, marking his first professional goal. The game took place on the South Side, and the win advances the Riverhounds to the Round of 16.

Ydrach's goal came six minutes into stoppage time following a corner kick from Robbie Mertz. NYCFC was playing with 10 players due to a red card. The Riverhounds will now face the Philadelphia Union, another MLS team, in the Round of 16 on May 20 or 21.

Goaltender Eric Dick played a crucial role in the Riverhounds' victory, making several key saves to maintain a level score. Notably, he blocked a hard shot from Mounsef Bakrar following a free kick opportunity by Mertz. Dick also made two significant saves within the first six minutes of the second half.

The decisive moment occurred in the 78th minute when Mertz delivered a free kick to the back post, and Ydrach's header found the net, giving Pittsburgh the lead. This goal proved sufficient to secure the upset victory against the MLS club.

Before their match against the Philadelphia Union, the Riverhounds are scheduled to play a league match against Louisville City FC in Louisville on May 10. With this win, the Riverhounds have won three of their last four U.S. Open Cup matches against MLS teams, a streak that began in 2023 when they reached the quarterfinals.
