Kaduna orders distribution of 500 trucks of fertilisers to farmers

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has initiated a significant agricultural support program by ordering the distribution of over 500 trucks of fertilizer, free of charge, to verified smallholder farmers. This initiative falls under the Agricultural Input Supply Support program, marking it as the largest in the state's history, aimed at boosting farmer productivity and ensuring food security.

Under the 'TallafinNoma (A KomaGona)' initiative, 69,000 smallholder farmers received quality maize seeds and agrochemicals during the rain-fed season. Additionally, the Kaduna State Government distributed free agricultural implements and inputs to cooperatives, including an 18 horse-power Tiller, an 18 horse power 3 inch solar-powered irrigation pumping machine, a 13 horse-power 2 inch solar-powered water irrigation machine, and gasoline-powered water irrigation pumps. Each cooperative also received 30 bags of Urea and NPK fertilizers, one motorized knapsack sprayer, one carton of herbicide, and one carton of pesticide to promote year-round farming.

The Commissioner of Agriculture, Alhaji Murtala Dabo, elaborated on Sani’s government strides in the agricultural sector, highlighting the procurement of a fleet of tractors to enhance mechanization under macro-mechanization efforts. A new public-private partnership framework has been developed to operationalize these tractors via revived mechanization hubs, ensuring a sustainable model where tractors are hired to farmers at highly subsidized rates.

Revenue generated from these private operators will be reinvested to acquire more tractors, aiming to extend mechanization to all areas of the state. Kaduna State is also developing the Agricultural Quality Assurance Centre (AQAC) with support from Afrexim Bank, a first of its kind in Northern Nigeria, to complement the Special Agricultural Processing Zone. The AQAC will ensure that agricultural produce meets both domestic and international quality standards, enhancing Kaduna’s competitiveness in the global market, particularly under the AfCFTA framework.

Murtala emphasized that the AQAC will enable farmers and agro-industries to produce more and better, meeting the highest standards required for export and premium markets. Governor Sani has increased funding, introduced new agricultural schemes, and provided more inputs to farmers than any previous government in the state's history.

The budgetary allocation for agriculture in the 2025 budget is N74.2 billion, representing 9.36 percent of the total budget. This reflects the government's commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and ensuring food security in Kaduna State.
