Ghana's Chief Justice Torkornoo Reinstatement and Suspension Controversy

Suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo could be reinstated if she is cleared of all allegations leveled against her, according to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications. Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa TV on June 27, 2025, Kwakye Ofosu affirmed that President John Dramani Mahama has no personal interest in the matter and is committed to abiding by the outcomes of due process, strictly adhering to constitutional provisions.
Chief Justice Torkornoo was recently suspended following the submission of three petitions accusing her of misconduct and abuse of office. In response to these serious claims, President Mahama has established a special investigative committee tasked with thoroughly probing the allegations. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the suspended Chief Justice will be afforded a full opportunity to defend herself during the inquiry.
“If she is able to demonstrate that the allegations are baseless, she will be reinstated. There will be no obstacles to her continuing in her role if she is vindicated,” Kwakye Ofosu clarified, highlighting the President’s commitment to fairness. Meanwhile, Justice Torkornoo has publicly described the petitions against her as politically motivated, asserting that the state is unfairly targeting her. This situation underscores the rigorous adherence to legal and constitutional frameworks in addressing high-profile misconduct allegations within the judiciary.
