Stakeholders sign MOU on data protection, digital economy
Paradigm Initiative (PIN), a prominent African digital rights and inclusion organization, has formalized a partnership with Senegal’s Commission de Protection des Données Personnelles through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to promote data protection and digital inclusion across the West African region. The signing, which took place in Abuja, signifies a collaborative effort to empower both Senegalese and Nigerian citizens, ensuring they are well-prepared to participate in the digital economy while maintaining the security of their personal data.
The MoU highlights a mutual dedication to increasing awareness, offering solutions for data rights infringements, and establishing a digital environment that respects individual rights. PIN’s Executive Director, Gbenga Sesan, stressed the significance of cooperation among various stakeholders to protect the digital economy. He noted that collaboration between government, the private sector, civil society, and the media is essential for maximizing the benefits of the digital economy. Sesan warned against focusing solely on the digital economy without adequate protection measures.
Ousmane Thiongawe, President of CDP Senegal, stated that Senegal’s data protection principles are consistent with international standards and harmonize with frameworks in countries such as Nigeria. This alignment ensures a unified approach to data protection, fostering trust and security in the digital space.
