Richard Neer's Saturday WFAN program ends - Newsday

Published 4 hours ago2 minute read

Richard Neer’s long-running Saturday early morning show on WFAN is over, the station announced on Friday.

Starting next weekend, the Saturday lineup will feature Joe Benigno from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by Chris McMonigle from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Evan Roberts announced the new lineup on his afternoon show on Friday, and Neer acknowledged the change in signing off on Saturday.

“This was my anchor for 27 years, doing this particular show,” Neer told listeners. “If it were up to me, I would continue to do it until I drop, but it’s not up to me.”

Neer thanked listeners and said he would focus more on writing books. He also will continue to fill in, including on holidays.

Fans will not have to wait long for that. He is scheduled to host WFAN’s morning show on Memorial Day.

In making the announcement, Roberts said that his first call as a WFAN caller was to Neer. The subject was what the Mets might get in a trade for the disappointing Vince Coleman.

“Richard will still be a big part of the WFAN family, and I’m a big fan of his,” Roberts said on the air on Friday.

“I will certainly miss you guys, callers, the regular callers, the occasional callers,” Neer said Saturday. “Being able to get paid for talking sports has been privilege for me for some 37 years (overall).”

Benigno had been working the later-morning shift on Saturday, a job previously occupied by the likes of Chris “Mad Dog” Russo and later by Roberts from 2007 to 2023.

McMonigle hosts overnight shows on WFAN. The Saturday slot will give him a showcase in front of a different audience.

“It’s one of those prime real estate things on the weekend,” McMonigle said on the air on Friday. “I’m very excited about it. I’m looking forward to it.”
