Reps call for troops deployment in Borno communities

The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Federal Government to deploy troops urgently to troubled communities in Borno State following recent Boko Haram attacks that claimed lives and destroyed valuable property.

This resolution came after the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by Midala Balami, who represents Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency in Borno State.

Speaking on the motion, Balami, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, informed the House that Boko Haram insurgents had recently attacked Jibwuwhi and Yarkawa communities in Hawul Local Government Area, leading to tragic losses, property destruction, and displacement of residents.

“These violent attacks have persisted despite ongoing security interventions, leaving communities vulnerable to repeated assaults, loss of livelihoods, and severe humanitarian crises,” Balami stated.

He expressed concern that residents of Jibwuwhi, Yarkawa, and surrounding areas were living in fear and distress, with many forced to flee their homes, creating an urgent need for enhanced security measures and humanitarian relief.

“The House is worried that, despite the magnitude of the attack, there has been inadequate security reinforcement and immediate relief support for the affected people, worsening their suffering and leaving them in dire need of assistance,” he added.

He further lamented that continued terrorist attacks in Hawul, Askira-Uba, Chibok, and other parts of Borno State not only endangered residents but also threatened national security and efforts toward peace and stability in the North East region.

Balami warned that failure to secure Jibwuwhi and Yarkawa and provide support to victims could encourage further attacks, exacerbate displacement, and deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant security agencies to deploy personnel immediately and reinforce security operations in Jibwuwhi, Yarkawa, and other vulnerable areas in Hawul Local Government Area to prevent future attacks.

Additionally, the House called on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and the National Emergency Management Agency, in collaboration with the Borno State Government, to provide immediate relief materials, including food, medical aid, and psychosocial support for the affected victims.

The House also mandated its Committees on Army, National Security and Intelligence, and Humanitarian Affairs to investigate security lapses that led to the attack, monitor the implementation of security reinforcements, and ensure the swift delivery of humanitarian assistance.

Furthermore, lawmakers urged the Federal Government to strengthen counter-terrorism strategies in Borno State, improve intelligence gathering, and enhance collaboration between security agencies and local vigilante groups to curb further insurgent activities in the Askira-Uba/Hawul Federal Constituency.
