Rebuilt classrooms will boost education, enrolment in Adamawa - NDIC

The commissioning of a newly reconstructed block of three classrooms and a principal’s office at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Kpasham in Demsa Local Government Area of Adamawa State is expected to significantly enhance the quality of education and increase student enrolment in the community.

The facility, rebuilt by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, replaces a structure destroyed by a storm in 2003. The intervention provides not just a physical upgrade but also renewed hope for learning among students and parents in the area.

Community members, education stakeholders, and government representatives gathered for the official commissioning on Friday, describing the development as a critical step toward improving the standard of education in Kpasham.

The newly furnished classrooms, complete with desks, whiteboards, and office furniture, are expected to create a more conducive learning environment that will attract new students and retain existing ones.

Speaking at the event, representatives of NDIC emphasised the agency’s belief in education as a cornerstone of national development. “Our goal is to contribute to building a future where every child learns in a safe and supportive environment,” said Ismail Mahmud, the NDIC Yola Zonal Officer, who represented the Managing Director.

The Principal of GDSS Kpasham, Homotufe Gilbert Bware, noted that the lack of infrastructure had been a major barrier to effective learning and school attendance for years. “This project will not only improve our academic environment but also encourage more parents to enrol their children, knowing they now have a better place to learn,” he said.

Education officials also echoed the need for sustained investment in school infrastructure as a means of bridging learning gaps and boosting enrolment in rural areas. The Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Post Primary Schools Management Board, Mr. Birsan Penuel, said the improved facilities would make the school more attractive to both students and teachers, creating a ripple effect across the education sector in the region.

Community leaders and parents expressed gratitude for the intervention and pledged to safeguard the facilities. “This school is now a symbol of progress. It will draw more children into the classroom and keep them there,” said Baba David, Chairman of the Kpasham Community Elders.

With the classrooms now ready for use, residents of Kpasham see the project as more than a building—it is an investment in their children’s future and a catalyst for educational growth in the community.
