Rain, torrential downpours forecast this week on Long Island - Newsday
The National Weather Service is calling for a lot of rain with thunderstorms and the chance for torrential downpours falling for the entire week as the remnants of Tropical Storm Chantal move up the East Coast and into the region.
The weather service said the system, now downgraded to a tropical depression that moved through the Carolinas on Sunday, was over portions of Virginia, eastern Maryland and Delaware, as well as southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania early Monday. Still, a bulletin from the National Hurricane Center warned "isolated to scattered flash flooding" is possible as the storm system moves through the area. It also warned that "life-threatening surf and rip currents" are likely at South Shore Atlantic Ocean beaches.
In an early morning advisory Monday, the weather service said Chantal could bring 2-4 inches of rainfall in many areas, though amounts of up to 6 inches were possible, elevating any risk of flooding — though that could be limited to Brooklyn, Queens and parts of Nassau County.
"Showers and possible thunderstorms may produce localized torrential downpours late Monday morning through Monday evening," a morning weather service advisory read, adding showers and thunderstorms could produce localized flash flooding Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The weather service said strong winds are possible in some storm locations, though it now appears most of those sustained, driving winds will remain west of Long Island. In fact, the weather service is now calling for mostly light winds accompanying rain and thunderstorms in the area.
Though rainfall amounts could vary by locale, the weather service is calling for week of high humidity and daytime temperatures in the mid-to-upper 80s early in the week.
As of 8 a.m. Monday was 75 degrees, headed for a high of about 84 degrees, the weather service said. Humidity was at 94%.
"Unfortunately, [Sunday] was the last of the nice beach days here," weather service meteorologist Dave Radell told Newsday Sunday, adding: "Not everyone is going to see rain, but for those who do, it could be heavy."
Though the likelihood of rain is in the forecast all week, the weather service said partly sunny skies could return Saturday. That sunshine could be brief, however, with the weather service also calling for a chance of showers Sunday.
