Rain, thunderstorm bring relief from heat & humidity to parts of city

Bhubaneswar: After grappling with rising temperature and oppressive humidity for the last few days, residents got much-needed relief on Tuesday afternoon following a spell of sudden rain accompanied by thunderstorm in isolated parts of the city.

Most parts of the state are reeling under hot and humid conditions for the past few days as the advance of southwest monsoon has slowed down, after its arrival on May 28.The city recorded 57.2 mm of rainfall around 4.30 pm on Tuesday, while no rainfall was recorded elsewhere in the state. Several localities in the city, including Rajmahal, Master Canteen, Khandagiri, Rasulgarh, Bomikhal and Balianta, witnessed traffic congestion and waterlogging following the downpour."Local convection clouds caused rain in the capital city. Rainfall was sporadic and in isolated pockets. Though it provided temporary relief, the intense heat and high humidity levels are likely to continue for the next few days," said Sanjeev Dwivedi, weather scientist at IMD's regional office here.Earlier in the day, Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 37.8°C, with relative humidity soaring to 97% by evening, making conditions extremely uncomfortable for residents.

The brief spell of rain, however, helped cool down the weather. However, IMD has forecast that hot and humid conditions would continue till June 7. IMD issued a heatwave warning for several coastal districts, with maximum temperatures likely to remain 3-5C above normal in many parts of the state. The alert covers Ganjam, Gajapati, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Jajpur.Talcher recorded the maximum temperature of 39.6C on Tuesday, followed by 39.5C in Balasore and Sambalpur, and 39.4C in Jharsuguda. IMD issued yellow warnings for heatwave conditions at one or two places in Balasore and Gajapati districts on Wednesday. Additionally, hot and humid weather is expected in several coastal and interior districts, including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh and Ganjam till June 7, the IMD bulletin said.Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely to occur at isolated places in districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Nabarangapur and Sundargarh over the next couple of days.
