Doha :Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah concluded their participation in the group stage of the 2024-2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship with victories, having defeated Al Khor and Al Shamal respectively in the final games of Group B.
The game between Al Rayyan and Al Khor commenced with a strong offensive display from Al Rayyan, who entered the game with notable confidence and established their style from the outset, controlling the pace both offensively and defensively, and finishing the first quarter with a comfortable lead of 23-10.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Al Khor made an effort to reclaim their lead and managed to adjust their offensive strategy, showcasing one of their best periods of the game, which they won 21-16, providing their supporters with a glimmer of hope before halftime.
However, upon returning to the court, the dynamics shifted dramatically. Al Rayyan effectively addressed their earlier mistakes and significantly elevated their performance, completely dominating the third quarter, which turned out to be the most crucial.
Al Khor managed to score only three points compared to Al Rayyan's 30, in a surprising turn of events that effectively extinguished their chances of a comeback.
Al Rayyan's dominance persisted into the fourth quarter, where they outscored Al Khor 20-18, despite some individual efforts from Al Khor. The match concluded with a decisive victory for Al Rayyan at 89-52, allowing them to secure a perfect score of six points and take the lead in the group. Darius Tyran Clark emerged as the standout player of the game, scoring 18 points and serving as a formidable offensive presence both near the basket and with mid-range shots. Yousef Yaqoub was the most effective player for Al Khor, contributing 16 points.
In the concluding game, Al Wakrah faced a more challenging path compared to Al Rayyan. The team engaged in a fiercely contested game against Al Shamal, which required overtime after a thrilling tie throughout the four quarters. Al Wakrah commenced the game with a well-rounded performance, narrowly securing the first quarter (20-18) and maintaining their advantage in the second quarter (23-21).
Nevertheless, Al Shamal, demonstrating resilience, regained control in the third quarter (17-15) and took the lead in the fourth quarter with an identical score, equalizing the game and necessitating overtime.
In the final five minutes, however, Al Wakrah showcased a renewed defensive strength and mental acuity, ultimately winning the game through the prowess of their players and their extensive experience.
They triumphed in the overtime period (19-13), concluding the game with a score of 92-86 in their favour. Al Wakrah's standout player, Aaron Mitchell, concluded the game with 27 points, solidifying his reputation as one of the tournament's pivotal players. Faris Avdic from Al Shamal also excelled, contributing 22 points. Following this round, Al Rayyan will automatically advance to the semi-finals, while Al Wakrah and Al Shamal, finishing in second and third place respectively, will compete in a knockout round to determine which teams will proceed to the semi-finals.
