Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, releases new trailer courtesy of Amazon MGM; Here's what we know of the adaptation of Andy Weir's novel
Ryan Gosling is set to star in “Project Hail Mary”, a film directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who’ve also spearheaded the acclaimed Spider-Verse animated movies. An adaptation of Andy Weir’s novel of the same name, the upcoming film sees Ryan Gosling star as Ryland Grace, a middle-school teacher who finds himself on a spaceship with no memories of how he made it there. Finding himself on a sudden mission to save his planet Earth from impending catastrophe, Ryland’s plight takes another turn when he encounters an alien, who’s on a mission of its own.
Project Hail Mary’s trailer shows the Earth as a planet in existential danger because the sun is dying. This impending cataclysm is part of a pattern of events, with multiple stars dying out because of a mysterious infection spreading through the galaxy. Because of Rylan Grace’s doctorate in molecular biology, he gets uprooted from his job as a middle school teacher and is inducted into the desperate, last-ditch mission to save the sun from dying, a plan he characterizes as a “hail mary”.
However, while he’s willing to offer his knowledge and expertise in the project, he grows reluctant to actually go out in space and investigate the matter directly, with him emphatically stating he’s not an astronaut. His amnesiac awakening aboard a spacecraft is implied to be the project’s attempt to force his hand. With no choice but to see his mission to its conclusion, Ryland takes command of the spacecraft, only to unexpectedly encounter an alien during his space travels, who he develops a friendship with.
